Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A)

TD Tax Return is a regulated UK tax return service based in Chelmsford, Essex, helping self-employed individuals and CIS subcontractors file their Self Assessment returns accurately and on time. Services are available in English, Hungarian, and Romanian.

If your question is not answered below, contact us at info@tdtaxreturn.com.

1. What is TD Tax Return and who is it for?

TD Tax Return is an HMRC Authorised Agent and AML-supervised tax practice based in Chelmsford, Essex. We help self-employed sole traders and CIS subcontractors across the UK file their Self Assessment tax returns correctly and on time.

We offer a fully online service — no office visit required — and work in English, Hungarian, and Romanian.

2. What is the Self Assessment deadline?

The online filing deadline is 31 January each year for the previous tax year (which runs from 6 April to 5 April).

For example: the 2024–25 tax year must be filed by 31 January 2026. Missing the deadline results in an automatic £100 penalty from HMRC, with further penalties for longer delays.

If you have missed a previous year, it is still possible to file late. Contact us and we will advise on your situation.

3. Do I need to be self-employed or CIS to use your services?

I work with self-employed individuals and CIS subcontractors who need help with their UK Self Assessment tax return. If you are unsure whether your situation fits, you can contact me before starting the onboarding process.

4. What information do you need from me to start?

To begin, you will be asked to complete an onboarding form and provide relevant documents such as:

— CIS statements

— income records

— expense details

— P60 / P45 (if applicable)

This allows me to assess your situation properly before confirming the service.

5. When do we sign the agreement?

The Service Agreement (Engagement Letter) is sent after I review your onboarding information and confirm the scope and fee. Work begins only after the agreement is signed.

6. Do you deal with HMRC on my behalf?

Yes — as an HMRC Authorised Agent, TD Tax Return is officially registered to communicate with HMRC directly on your behalf. This means we can submit your return, liaise on your account, and assist with Government Gateway setup.

This service covers the preparation and submission of your tax return. HMRC enquiries, formal investigations, or extended correspondence are not included unless agreed separately in writing.

7. Can you guarantee a tax refund?

No. Any tax refund is calculated and issued by HMRC. I explain the figures clearly before submission, but I cannot guarantee refund amounts or HMRC processing times.

8. What if I realise I forgot something after submission?

Amendments after submission may be possible, but they are outside the original scope and may involve an additional fee. It is important to provide complete and accurate information during onboarding.

9. Is my information kept confidential?

Yes. All personal and financial information is handled confidentially and in line with UK data protection laws. Details are explained in the Privacy Notice.

10. Do you offer ongoing bookkeeping?

At present, services focus on Self Assessment and CIS tax returns. If bookkeeping or ongoing support is required, this can be discussed separately.

11. How long does the process take?

Timeframes depend on how quickly information is provided and the complexity of your situation. Once all documents are received, I will confirm the expected timeline.

12. What if I am not sure where to start?

That is completely normal. You can contact me first, and I will explain whether the service is suitable before sending any documents.

13. I work under CIS. Do I need a separate CIS tax return?

No. CIS subcontractors submit their tax return through the UK Self Assessment system. CIS income and deductions are included within the Self Assessment return. As part of the process, you will be asked to provide your CIS statements and relevant expense information so everything can be reported correctly.

14. How long does a CIS tax refund take to arrive?

Once your Self Assessment return is submitted, HMRC typically processes refunds within 2–6 weeks if filed online. The refund is paid directly to your UK bank account.

Processing times can vary depending on HMRC workload and whether they request any additional information. We will keep you informed throughout.

15. Do you offer services in other languages?

Yes. TD Tax Return provides tax return services in English, Hungarian, and Romanian.

If you are a Hungarian or Romanian worker in the UK and need help with your Self Assessment or CIS tax return, you can communicate with us in your preferred language throughout the entire process — from your first question to final submission.
